Opry Time …

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Another contender for the worst album cover of all times! The heart-warming cover picture is ‘an action photo of a typical Grand Ole Opry performance’.

‘Opry Time In Tennessee’ was released in the UK in 1962 on EMI’s Stateside subsidiary label. The album featured 20 old-time breakdowns and fiddle tunes ‘live’ from the Ryman Auditorium. Actually, these are all studio performances heavily overdubbed with crowd noises, typical of many records of the time. Nevertheless a bunch of fun toons from Cowboy Copas, Chubby Wise and the Rainbow Ranch Boys, Moon Mullican, Benny Martin and the Boys, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Uncle Josh, Red Sovine and Lonzo and Oscar.

Drag up your stool, get your old flat-top on you’re gone again!

That Dobro Sound …

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

We celebrate some of our favourite covers from long-deleted albums. This is what the digital download generation are missing …

That Dobro Sound’s Goin’ Round was released on the Starday label by Nashville-based Gusto Records in 1975. The album featured a number of dobroists such as Shot Jackson, Uncle Josh, Hoss Linneman. Not all played in traditional bluegrass tunings – Shot Jackson played in open E tuning on two of the tracks in this set – Hounddog Blues and Fort Worth Drag.

Check out Jim’s Dobro pages for more information on Dobro tunings.
